The Champion Ignition transformer is designed to function in an industrial environment. Functionally equivalent in physical size, mounting, output voltage, and duty cycle as units supplied for single channel industrial ignition on General Electric LM1600,LM2500,LM5000,and LM6000 industrial turbines. Also applicable to Siemens 501F and 501G industrial turbines.
The ignition transformer is constructed in a manner, hermetically sealed, to meet the requirements for operation in areas where explosive atmospheres my occur infrequently or for short periods of time (ATEX requirement)
The exciter is comprised of an EMI filter, power/isolation transformer, high voltage rectifier with energy storage capacitor, a high energy spark gap switch and pulse generating output transformer.
The AC input power is filtered to prevent internal switching "noise" from being released to the power line. The input voltage is stepped up through the power transformer and additionally increased by voltage rectifier circuit to charge the storage capacitor.
The capacitor stored energy is held back by a spark gap switch. When the spark gap breakdown voltage is reached, the spark gap releases the stored energy through the output transformer, through the accessory ignition lead and on to spark the igniter.
The cycle is repeated for as long as power is applied. When power is removed, any residual energy in the stored capacitor is discharged through a "bleed down" resistor.
